Church History
In 1969, Mercy Baptist Church was founded by the people
of Akron Baptist Temple as a mission to take the gospel
to the thriving community of Weirton West Virginia. This
mission was headed up by Dr. Dallas Billington and
strongly backed by the people of the church. The first
worship services were held in a rented store front on
Pennsylvania Avenue. The services continued strong here
until another location was found on 148 Marie
Avenue-this building became the church for a number of
years. In 1988, the church was relocated to its current
facilities on Pennsylvania Avenue and this same year the
school academy was started. Many renovations have been
made and the next property has been purchased for
further growth. In 1994, the gym was built and named in
memory of the late Pastor Bush. Pastor Bush faithfully
served the lord as youth minister and bus director of
the church until the Lord called him home to heaven.
Mercy Baptist Church is lead up by Pastor Jim Rhodes.
Pastor Rhodes answered the call to the ministry in 1984
and a year later, Pastor Hawley joined him in service.
